Devolver Digital ‘Not E3’ Stream Is In a League All It’s Own
Each week we bring you two moments, one of epic success, someone who absolutely nailed it! And another of an epic failure, someone who totally failed it. This week for the Nailed It we tip our hats to Devolver Digital and their stream showcase for ‘Not E3.’ Devolver Digital has continuously found entertaining ways to deliver their new announcements and completely call out the entire gaming industry at the same time.
Nailed It! Devolver Digital
Thanks to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the yearly gaming convention that everyone looks forward to, E3, was canceled. Thanks to that cancellation, many developers have elected to still hold this own streams and conferences online in what’s being called Not E3. Devolver Digital isn’t considered a triple-A developer, despite putting on shows that rival some Sci-Fi movies. Their games don’t get the same fanfare and hype that Sony or Nintendo do, so what makes them so special?
It’s the meta-commentary that accompanies their game announcements. Two years ago it was a satire on how prevalent DLC and micro-transactions within games have become, that year it was violence and the mistreatment of developers. Each year the conference builds upon the last one as Devolver slowly creates a small universe that could rival that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last year their CEO was killed on stream and then rebuilt like Robocop to do this year’s stream.
It’s truly something to behold and there will never be another company that has the balls to do something so different and so risky. The only complaint I have is that this year’s 45-minute stream was maybe a bit too much. At that point, I could’ve just binged a few episodes of Warrior Nun on Netflix.
