Houston Outlaws And Children’s Miracle Network Unveil GamingTogether
As COVID-19 continues to affect our way of life, some organizations are stepping up to help their communities. The Houston Outlaws announced today that they’re getting in on the action. They’ve partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the Harris County-Sports Authority to present their new GamingTogether initiative.
#GamingTogether
#GamingTogether presents an opportunity to bring gaming and family interaction to the forefront in the city, while simultaneously supporting and promoting traditional sports & physical activity during this time of shut down and quarantine. The initiative will run all across the city of Houston and the surrounding area and will feature some of the most prominent names in esports gaming, arts, sports, media, and music.
All proceeds from GamingTogether will benefit Extra Life, the gaming division of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Texas Children’s Hospital is involved in the project, which will come as no surprise to the avid gamers out there. Texas Children’s Hospital has been embracing the importance of gaming for over a decade. Proceeds will be used to provide protection equipment and ventilators to those in need, while also preparing for an influx of COVID-19 cases.
Giving through gaming
While #GamingTogether is a Houston-centric event, it speaks to a much larger picture. Over the last twenty years, the gaming community has established itself as one of giving. Events like Extra Life’s streaming marathon or Awesome Games Done Quick have raised millions of dollars for great causes. No longer just a niche hobby, gaming has become a primary form of entertainment for much of the country.
In an era where we can’t go to the movies or watch our favorite traditional sports teams compete, gaming has emerged as a safe alternative. The World Health Organization is now praising online gaming as a safe means of socializing, while a year ago they were giving warnings of video game addiction. Gaming has now become a hobby for all. Parents, children, teachers, doctors, office workers, musicians. We’re all gamers at this point.
How you can get involved
The Outlaws GamingTogether initiative is looking to prove that point by inviting everyone to share videos of their gaming crew.
Here’s how it works:
- Gather your friends or family members that you are social distancing or quarantining with during these times
- Pick a game- whether it’s a video game, card game or traditional board game
- Record your group in action (up to :30 seconds max) and upload your video to Outlaws.gg/GamingTogether
After you submit your video, be sure to get Q’D UP on HoustonSports.org with Patti Smith every Thursday night, beginning on Thursday, April 9th at 7pm CST as she interviews Houston’s biggest sports legends and current players to find out everything they’re thinking about, including COVID-19, and see if your video made it onto the show!
You can also check out the website to see your video and other submissions. Feel free to share your video on social media!
