Overwatch League 2020 Grand Finals Teams Are Set
The playoff stages of the Overwatch League 2020 season are over. Four teams, two from North America and two from the Asian Region, will go on to the grand finals. The grand finals will take place in Korea on the weekend of October 8th. The top two North American teams face off against the top two teams from the Asian region. The grand finals will be a double-elimination bracket to decide the grand champion of the 2020 Overwatch League season.
The Final Four
APAC Region
The three of the final four should be no surprise, but one of them had a rocky season getting there. The Seoul Dynasty was the 5th seed going into the APAC region playoffs tournament. However, they more than earned their place in the grand finals as they battled it out with the other teams. The Seoul Dynasty defeated the Hangzhou Spark in a clean sweep. Then did the same to the Guangzhou charge. They also took the Shanghai Dragons to a game five before being knocked into the losers’ bracket. There they also won in a clean sweep against the New York Excelsior.
The Shanghai Dragons, the first seed of the APAC region, was the winner of the playoff tournament for the APAC region. They’ve been a force to be reckoned with this year after a complete turnaround from their 0-40 inaugural season and a middling 2019 season. They are the team to beat in the grand finals as they sit with the best record in the entire league at 27 wins and only 2 losses (some of those wins are bonus’ from tournament victories). One of their star DPS players Byung-sun “Fleta” Kim was also named the 2020 MVP.
NA Region
In North America, of course, the defending 2019 champions took first place in the playoffs, the San Francisco Shock. The Shock has been a dominant force in the Overwatch League since the 2019 season started. The Shock hasn’t slowed down and has only added more insane talent to their roster. Even after losing the 2019 MVP Jay “Sinatraa” Won, they continued to rise. During their playoff run, the Shock were taken to a game five by the Washington Justice who had their own unprecedented performance. But after sending them to the losers bracket then beating the Atlanta Reign and Philadelphia Fusion in a 3 – 1 match-up, they secured their spot in the grand finals.
The Philadelphia Fusion came into the playoffs as the number one seed and proved why against the Los Angeles Gladiators and Valiant with clean sweep wins over both teams. But their match-up against the second seed San Francisco Shock didn’t quite for their way. Despite a 3 – 1 match score, the Fusion put up one of the toughest fights yet of the playoffs. In the losers bracket, they were the first team to truly come up with an answer to Washington’s nigh unstoppable RoadhogZarya composition and won with a 3 and 0 clean sweep. With that win, they secured their spot in the grand finals alongside the other three teams.
