Overwatch League Countdown Cup Finals and Beyond
The OWLs Nest is CheckpointXP’s official podcast for the Overwatch League. Every episode Robbie Landis is joined by Jake Lyon to discuss the latest league moves, matches, and more. The Overwatch League Countdown Cup is finished and the winners have been crowned. As the Overwatch League continues its march towards the post-season, but what do the results tell us to expect?
The Dragon’s Reign
In the APAC region, the Shanghai Dragons once again reign supreme. They took a first-round bye due to their seeding results and tore through every other team they came up against on their way to victory. The biggest surprise came from the Guangzhou Charge who won the last tournament for the Summer Showdown. They had shown superior handling of the meta and proved they could stand toe-to-toe with the others in the region. They lost to New York in a game five, then NY was dismantled in a clean sweep by Shanghai. Were the Guangzhou Charge having an off week? Or have the Dragons found a new level of focus and determination.
The Shock Legacy Continues
In the North American region, the first few rounds of the Countdown Cup offered no surprises. There weren’t any bracket breaking results like there were in the Summer Showdown. Most of the matches were three and zero clean sweeps. The semi-final match-ups were just as most predicted. At the top of the mountain stood the Florida Mayhem, the Paris Eternal, the Philadelphia Fusion, and the San Francisco Shock. Despite the Mayhem and Eternal showing in the past they had what it takes to overcome the top teams, the Shock and Fusion were able to reassert their dominance.
Even with a Genji-centric meta on their side, Paris fell to the Fusion. This was in large part due to Paris’ Kyung-bo “Alarm” Kim shutting down the Eternal’s Yeong-han “SP9RK1E” Kim Genji with sleep darts. After an amazing semi-final, we had the Shock meet the Fusion for the championship. Both teams earned their place, but as is usually the case the San Francisco Shock proved they were a cut about the rest. In a final score of 4 to 2, Jake mentions that whatever the case it’s usually a bad idea to bet on anything but the Shock.
It’s important to remember that anything can happen in the Overwatch League. But one match-up is very likely to happen in October’s Grand Finals. The match-up everyone has been waiting for to determine the best of 2020. Will the San Francisco Shock face off against the Shanghai Dragons? And in that match-up who has the edge?
