5 Things to Expect from the League of legends MMO
So a League of Legends MMO is in the works. For veterans to the Massively Multiplayer Online world, this is sure to be an exciting announcement. And for all you newcomers, just take it from me, this could be big! I got my start in the industry podcasting about MMO’s, so for me, this feels like a homecoming.
Details are still scarce, so it’s time to compile our wish-list for the game. Here are 5 things we want to see in the League of Legends MMO.
1. Vast Character Customization Options
This might be one of the most important aspects of the League MMO. League of Legends has made its bread on the backs of powerful and interesting characters. Now it’s our turn to design our own champion of Runeterra. This will be tricky, as the heroes of League of Legends are all so different.
There are fire mages, void monstrosities, robots, and magical girls. That’s a lot of aesthetics that people are going to want access to when building a character. Riot Games is going to have to be careful to not let it turn into DC Universe Online. While DCUO managed to let us make a variety of different heroes, none of them really ended up feeling all that unique.
2. Develop the League Universe
Runeterra is a massive world, which is going to need a massive game to show off. The League of Legends MMO should be chiefly concerned with pulling the lore of the world together. We should get a much better idea of how the various factions of Runeterra interact with one another.
Ever since the original lore of the game was made non-canon, we’ve had to piece things together a little at a time. I’m hopeful that with this game as well as the upcoming anime, we’ll get a much better idea of what’s going on in the world.
3. Strong PVP
I’m not usually a fan of Player vs Player content in MMOs. However, the entire genesis of this game lies in a MOBA title. At the end of the day, I wanna see how the champion I build will stand up to others. I would also love to see a PVP tournament where the prize is your character being brought into League of Legends.
4. Ties To The MOBA
That said, you’re building your own universe. You’ve got the original MOBA, an anime, the card game, comic books, the works. Let your MMO connect to these other pieces of media and use it to expand the world at large. As I dig more into the Netflix Marvel series and look forward to the new Disney+ series, I’m enjoying how much they expand my experience in the movies.
I’d love to see the same thing happen in the MMO. What if events in this game affect Summoner’s Rift in League of Legends? That would be awesome!
5. An Interesting End-Game Gameplay Loop
This is perhaps the single most important thing this game can deliver about. MMO’s live and die by their end-game gameplay loop. For World Of Warcraft, it’s an outstanding raiding system. For Final Fantasy XIV, it’s glamour.
The League of Legends MMO is going to need to find its niche. Maybe it’s PVP or maybe it’s raiding. My guess is somewhere in the middle of those two things. But whatever it is, it needs something to have players excited to reach the level cap.
