The Biggest Surprises of the Overwatch Countdown Cup
The OWLs Nest is CheckpointXP’s official podcast for the Overwatch League. Every episode Robbie Landis is joined by Jake Lyon to discuss the latest league moves, matches, and more. This episode Robbie and Jake take a look at the first week of the Overwatch League Countdown Cup and talk about the three biggest surprises.
The final tournament of the 2020 Overwatch League regular season is underway. The Countdown Cup will put an end to the regular season and provide seeding for the post-season on the road to the grand finals. With new hero pools and every team clamoring for as many wins as they can for better post-season placement surprises were not in short order.
Jake and Robbie break down some of the biggest WTF moments from the first week. Depending on which side of the surprise you’re on, some were great and others were a bit embarrassing. From the Chengdu Hunters playing their own original, patented style and giving the New York Excelsior a reverse sweep, to the San Francisco Shock putting star Reinhardt Tank Super on Genji. The Toronto Defiant also complete their third win in the past four matches. Could this be a turning point for the Canadian team?
If the Countdown Cup so far is any indication, the rest of the regular season will not disappoint. As we march closer and closer to the post-season, what other teams will give us big surprises? We’re unlikely to see Super again on the Genji, but could the Chengdu Hunters be marching toward a high seed placement in the Overwatch League Countdown Cup?
