The EVO Fighting Game Championship is the largest collection of FGC events in the world. And every year fighting game fans wait with baited breath to see if their game makes the main stage.
In a stream hosted by FGC legend Mike Ross and tournament organizer, Joey Cuellar, the two went through all of the games that will see big finals over the course of the tournament weekend. Some long time stalwarts like Street Fighter V, Dragonball FighterZ, Tekken 7, and Smash Ultimate were confirmed with little fanfare. However, there were some that took viewers by surprise.
Samurai Shodown see its return to EVO in its second year. While the game doesn’t have as big of a player base others, it brings in some of the top legends of the FGC like Kazunoko and Alex Valle. Also confirmed was the yet to be released GranBlue Fantasy fighting game. While its an unproven series, it looks to fill the void left by the absence of Guilty Gear which will not see the main stage this year. One glaring omission, however, is Mortal Kombat 11. The game has one of the most passionate followings and competitors, and its the only NetherRealm Studios game on the major circus right now. Its omission is shocking considering one of the FGC’s brightest stars, SonicFox, sits atop the MK totem pole.
But the biggest shock of the stream was the return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Some herald MvC2 as the most hype game to ever feature at EVO. A litany of FGC memes, phrases and personalities came out of the MvC2 community. At EVO 2020 the MvC2 Tournament of Champions is a special invitational bracket where some of the top players of all time will return. Expect to see former EVO champs like Yipes and perhaps the greatest MvC2 player of all time, Justin Wong.
EVO 2020 goes down from July 31st to August 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas. Registration for the even is now open.
