Discord Voice Chat Platform Shifts from Strictly Gaming to General Communities
Discord is opening its doors to everybody who wants to join, not just gamers.
Discord, the voice-chat platform which started its life as a gaming-oriented voice chat platform, is now shifting towards a more general direction. In a recent statement, the company announced it will now focus more on tailoring its platform into one that accepts and hosts any and all communities, not just gaming which it's known for now.
“Games are what brought many of you on the platform, and we’ll always be grateful for that,” the company states. “As time passed, a lot of you realized, and vocalized, that you simply wanted a place designed to hang out and talk in the comfort of your own communities and friends.”
As it moves towards a more general direction, new users will have a more streamlined experience, and those looking to start new servers can use pre-made templates instead of starting from scratch. A recent Discord update also added a server video which allows for video chat outside of private groups, which is very interesting.
Since the update, Discord has actually revamped their website to be more fitting of their new tagline: “Your place to talk.” Amidst the situations that are unveiling with harassment in the Twitch communities and social media platforms, Discord addressed their commitment to keeping their platform a safe space: “We will continue to take decisive action against white supremacists, racists, and others who seek to use Discord for evil.”
