2019 International Prize Pool Approaching $30 Million
This year’s incarnation of The International is shaping up to be their biggest one yet. Despite the age of the game, the fan base is still fueling the International to bigger and bigger prize pools. For those not in the know, The International is DOTA 2’s largest tournament of the year. It starts off with a $1.6 million prize pool, funded by Valve, and a portion of micro-transaction sales within the game boost that prize pool.
Year in and year out, that portion of sales balloons the prize pool for The International to higher and higher numbers. Last year’s event came in a little over $25 million, and the growth had slowed from previous years. This lead many to think that the event had just about peaked, but we can put those thoughts to rest. With just about a month left until group stages begin, the prize pool for the event is already over $29 million. It’s a mere $700,000 away from breaking $30 million, and should accomplish that in the near future.
Group stages are scheduled to get underway on August 15th.
