As the Overwatch League (OWL) and the Call of Duty World League (CWL) look to bring true geolocation to esports, Activision/Blizzard has named a new leadership for each league. Johanna Faries as the new commissioner for the CWL.
For over 10 years, Faries has worked in the NFL in roles such as VP of Marketing Strategy & Fan Development. In an interview released by the official Activision blog, Faries spoke about what she’s learned about the CWL so far.
“I’ve learned that while we have tremendous potential ahead of us, we are also building atop an already strong foundation. This season’s Call of Duty World League has been stellar and has provided an excellent opportunity to learn from the many people and teams who have been driving and operating this scene for several years now. It’s been phenomenal to see how much care and dedication goes into our current program and to see how primed the Call of Duty esports community is for next level growth. “

The appointment also comes on the back of Pete Vlastelica being officially announced as commissioner of the Overwatch League. He is currently the President and CEO of Esports at the company and will retain that position as well. Vlastelica also served as the Executive Vice President for Fox Sports for 3 years before joining Activision/Blizzard.
With two new executives coming in with traditional sports experience it will be interesting to see the future of ActiBlizz’s esports.
