The Best of DC Comics Early Rebirth Era
The dynamic duo of Robbie Landis and Ben Morse is back once again for another episode of the Other Identity. The Other Identity is a podcast about exploring the culture created by comic books. This week Robbie and Ben talk about DC Comics and their Rebirth Line-up as they continue their reading challenge of #DCRebirthEraChallenge.
The Best of Rebirth
Robbie and Ben have been making their way through a 2,000+ issue reading list of DC Comics Rebirth Era. Ben has been taking his time, reading an issue a day, but Robbie is more than 600 issues deep. They talk about what they loved so far and what’s surprised them. For Robbie, it’s been less about the heroes and more about the villains. From Killer Frost’s redemption arc in Suicide Squad and Justice League of America to Clayface in Detective Comics. The writers who can take a villain and start to turn them around have been the highlights of Rebirth.
Super Dad
Superman has always been one of Ben’s favorite heroes, not due to the character himself but what he inspires in other people. The Superman of the Rebirth Era put a new twist on Clark Kent that both Robbie and Ben think is the best thing to happen to the character in his entire history. In Rebirth Clark Kent and Lois Lane have a son, Jonathan Kent, who is slowly inheriting his father’s powers. The family dynamic between the Smith’s (they’re under an alias because they’re not the Kent’s from this universe originally, it’s a whole thing!) is one of the most refreshing takes on Superman. It’s also one of the most touching and lasting stories of the Rebirth Era.
