Esports Program Profile: University of Utah
University of Utah Esports Profile
This week, we’re taking a look at the University of Utah, a public university in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a top-tier varsity esports program. Utah holds the record of being the first to launch a varsity esports program in the Power Five athletic conference. Since the program started in 2017, numerous teams from the university have participated in several renowned national and international gaming tournaments independently. The University of Utah esports program offers four major esports titles: League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Hearthstone.
The Crimson Gaming Club
Before the varsity program launched, Utah was known for its culture of game studies and development. This was due partly to the presence of the university’s Entertainment Arts & Engineering Program, which created an academic foundation for gamers to learn about the technical intricacies of game development.
The culture of game studies and development existed at the University of Utah long before esports became a viable choice of a university program, thanks to the university’s Entertainment Arts & Engineering Program.
The Crimson Gaming Club at Utah is one of the largest student gaming clubs in the United States. The club consists of more than 600 student members who participate in multiple regional and national gaming tournaments. The active gaming culture and overwhelming student interest greatly contributed to the administration’s decision to form an official varsity esports program.
Academic Excellence
Aside from its credible esports program, Utah has an equally impressive academic standing. The university ranked amongst the top 40 public universities in the United States, according to the U.S. News & World Report.
Amongst the 40 educational institutions on the list, the University of Utah is one of the six universities with less than $10,000 annual in-state tuition and fees, making it one of the most affordable academic options for higher education in Utah.
Additionally, the university offers esports scholarships ranging up to $5,000 for all four gaming titles, including League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Hearthstone.
Gaming Degrees at the University of Utah
The Entertainment Arts & Education (EAE) program at the University of Utah is one of the top-ranked programs in video game education and research. The leading national program employs the expertise of top industry gaming professionals to curate a unique learning experience for the students.
Some of the degree programs offered by the EAE at the University of Utah include a Bachelor of Science in Games (BSG), a Minor in Games, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with an Entertainment Arts and Engineering Emphasis, a Master of Entertainment Arts and Engineering (MEAE), and a dual MBA/MEAE degree aimed at equipping the students with the knowledge of designing, creating, and publishing games and the required business acumen to run their own esports/gaming businesses.
