The CheckpointXP College Esports Media Poll: October
Sometimes College Esports can be a lot to keep track of. So the awesome people out at eFuse made a great poll asking some of the top coaches in the land who were the top teams at the college level. It made us here at CheckpointXP On Campus an idea. The CheckpointXP College Esports Media Poll! Why? Because we are the only dedicated college esports news outlet (that we know of).
So at the start of the month, we took a look at three of the top esports in the land and ranked the top teams. So here’s a look at the best teams in League of Legends, Overwatch, and Rocket League at the start of October.
(Rankings submitted on October 12th 2020)
League of Legends
- 1. Maryville
- 2. Harrisburg
- 3. Columbia
- 4. Grand View
- 5. Winthrop
- 6. Illinois Wesleyan
- 7. UC Irvine
- 8. Illinois State
- 9. Miami (OH)
- 10. Stony Brook
Additional Thoughts
But I think, again, far and away Maryville and Harrisburg are the two top teams in the nation and Columbia is very close. But what we saw at the Harrisburg Invitational only proved to me that Maryville’s A and B in Harrisburg’s A and B team are so far ahead of the rest of the country that I am not entirely sure that there is even room for some of these other schools to make a lane in. I mean, the finals, the semifinals for the Harrisburg Invitational, both were Maryville versus Harrisburg. You really can’t say these are not the two best schools in this esport anymore.

Overwatch
- 1. Maryville
- 2. Northwood
- 3. HU Storm
- 4. Utah
- 5. UC Irvine
- 6. UT Dallas
- 7. Mizzou Esports
- 8. University of North Texas
- 9. Winthrop
- 10. UNLV
Additional Thoughts
These top five probably won’t surprise you, but it is number one Maryville. And then Northwood. If you storm Utah and UC Irvine, I actually put above Dallas and scores. Dallas, I have a number six. So what I’m going to say is that I think Irvine needs to play a lot more. They have not only played in many invitationals. I do think they’re very good, but I don’t know if they’re better than Utah. I don’t know if they can hang around with if HU Storm because we haven’t seen them play.

Rocket League
- 1. Northwood
- 2. Arizona
- 3. North Texas
- 4. USF
- 5. USF Green
- 6. Ohio State
- 7. Akron
- 8. Oregon
- 9. Kansas State
- 10. Stockton
Additional Thoughts
I look at this list and I go, no California teams….. A lot of centralization into the Midwest and in the South. I think, guys, what we’re starting to see is California is losing its grip on at least the college esports scene.
