Gaming Twitter Turns On A Google Stadia Creative Director
Each week we bring you two moments, one of epic success, someone who absolutely nailed it! And another of an epic failure, someone who totally failed it. This week for the Failed It we take a look at the Twitter account of Alex Hutchinson. Alex is the creative director for the Montreal Studio of Stadia Games and Entertainment. Not to be confused with the creative director of ALL of Google Stadia. He had a hot take on social media that angered not just the collective whole of Twitter, but even Google released a statement.
Another Hot Take?
Streamers all over Twitch have been contending with DMCA takedown notices in regards to music rights. It’s an ongoing battle that Twitch has made some attempts to assuage. The reason it’s been getting so much recent attention is that some streamers received these takedown notices despite deleting old clips and broadcasts. In some cases, deleted videos have somehow returned and then received a DMCA takedown. Some influencers are theorizing that when Twitch attempted to find some way to allow streamers to use music, some takedown notices were put on hold. But once those talks fell through, the takedowns continued. If a DMCA had been on hold and a streamer deleted the clip, it came back.
Alex Hutchinson seems to have no sympathy for streamers trying to navigate these troubled waters in regards to music licenses. He had this to say on social media, “Streamers worried about getting their content pulled because they used music they didn’t pay for should be more worried by the fact that they’re streaming games they didn’t pay for as well. It’s all gone as soon as publishers decide to enforce it.”. He followed up with another tweet, “The real truth is the streamers should be paying the developers and publishers of the games they stream. They should be buying a license like any real business and paying for the content they use.”.
No One Agrees
Very, very people seemed to agree with Mr. Hutchinson’s take on the matter. Industry veteran Idk maybe you're getting flak because you're picking this particular battle in a world where C-suite executives make $30m/year and devs don't get royalties so they'd never see any of that streaming money in the first place
Even the parent company of Google Stadia caught wind of the tweet and released a statement ensuring consumers that Google does not share the feelings and opinions of Mr. Hutchinson. You know it’s a bad take when even Google, one of the largest, monopolistic companies on the planet says you’re going too far.
