The 2nd major of the Call of Duty League has come and passed. With plenty of good games to watch and storylines to follow, it can be hard to keep up with what happened at the event. Here’s what you need to know.
OpTic
With the retirement of one of the GOATs of the professional Call of Duty scene in Scump, Optic still made some waves in this tournament and was considered a favorite to win it all.
On day one they were able to knock the LA Thieves down into the loser’s bracket after a close 3-2 victory. However it wasn’t very long until OpTic joined them after getting swept by the ROKKR in round 2. There they would pull off a sweep of their own on the hometown Boston Breach.
Unfortunately this is where their story came to an end as the LA Thieves got their revenge beating OpTic 3-1.
Hometown Heroes?
The host of this major, the Boston Breach, were looking to take advantage of the home crowd by trying to make their own run at the title.
However, things for the Breach went south fast as they were sent into the loser’s bracket in round one after losing to FaZe 3-2 in a tightly contested game.
Here in the loser’s bracket they would win their first two matchups against the Seattle Surge and LA Guerrillas by a score of 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. But as stated eariler, they would lose out to Optic thus knocking the hometown team out of the tournament.
Defending Champs
The New York Subliners, who were the winners of the first CDL Major, were looking to repeat as major champions.
Unfortunately for them, things got harder immediately after losing to the ROKKR in a close 3-2 battle. After a 3-1 victory over the London Royal Ravens they would ultimately fall to the LA Thieves in a 3-0 sweep. Thus ending their chance at a repeat title.
Finals
Finally the eventual winners of the tournament were made clear. The Atlanta FaZe are your Call Of Duty League Major 2 Champions. They were able to run through the entirety of the upper bracket and stake their claim as the current best team in the CDL.
After a close game with the Boston Breach in round 1, FaZe would go on to sweep the Toronto Ultra. This would punch their ticket to the winner’s finals to go up against the ROKKR. After going down in the series 2-1 they would rally back and win 3-2 after a close final round of Search and Destroy on map 5.
In the Grand Finals they went up against the LA Thieves in a best of 5 series. The Thieves were unable to capitalize on early momentum after winning map 1 as FaZe responded with 2 map wins of their own. The Thieves were able to momentarily stop the bleeding winning map 4 and tying the series at 2-2. But FaZe would go onto win the next two maps and thus winning the series 4-2 crowning them as champions.
The qualification matches for the 3rd Major start up on February 17 so if you want to see the start of the road to Texas be sure to tune in to the official Call of Duty twitch channel.
