PS5 Production Numbers Lowered By Sony

It may be a while before you can get your hands on Sony’s latest PS5 system.

Don’t get your hopes to high this holiday season, Sony is cutting production for the PS5. Last week, Sony announced that production was going to be decreased by 1 million PS5 units until March 2022.

Initial plans included Sony producing 16 million units by March 2022, but due to worldwide chip shortages, the total number will now be 15 million units.

What is causing the chip shortage?

Semiconductor chips are used in everything from household appliances to cars and consoles. Shortages of these chips have occurred due to a cascading series of setbacks from manufacturing, logistic and shipping difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now global industries that operate in technology, automobiles and computing are facing the brunt of this microchip shortage.

Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Hiroki Totoki, recently told investors that these issues have grown more severe, causing PS5 production to lower as a consequence.

When will the chip shortage end?

How long this shortage may last is anyone’s guess. Forrester, a business research and advisory company, estimates that the shortage could last all the way up until 2023 – with further setbacks seemingly inevitable.

Consumers are starting to feel the effects of this shortage too. As supply for PC parts diminishes, demand has only increased, causing PC parts to skyrocket as a result.

Unfortunately, many can’t expect a new PS5 or a sweet graphics card under the Christmas tree this year. Looks like it’s time to bust out the old consoles and catch up on our video game backlog.
