The OWLs Nest is CheckpointXP’s official podcast dedicated to the Overwatch League. Every episode Robbie Landis is joined by Jake Lyon to discuss the latest league moves, matches, and more. This episode Robbie and Jake discuss some of the many upsets from the Overwatch League Summer Showdown.
The second tournament of the Overwatch League, the Summer Showdown, proved to be just as exciting as the May Melee. From a new Genji-dominated meta to several huge upsets. This was one of the best weekends of Overwatch since the season began. The APAC region didn’t have too many surprises with the level of parity it’s seen in the past few months. But the North American bracket was shaken up from day one.
The Bracket Breakers
It started with the Houston Outlaws taking a 3 to 1 victory over the Florida Mayhem. The Mayhem were the May Melee Champions just last month. The Outlaws did take the Mayhem to game five during the qualifying rounds, but it was a win few predicted. The Washington Justice also saw improvements as they bested the Los Angeles Gladiators, showing that their new roster was finally starting to gel.
Defiant Until The End
The biggest upset came at the hands of the 11th seed Toronto Defiant, who despite having a star-studded line-up has struggled all season to assert their place in the league. With Brady “Agilities” Girardi’s Genji leading the charge, they defeated the up and coming rookie squad of the Los Angeles Valiant. They also went on to upset the 2nd seed Paris Eternal. They’d go on to fall to the Philadelphia Fusion but still left an impression on the Summer Showdown.
Finally, the Paris Eternal, who have struggled to prove themselves as a top contender in the lead finally broke the mold. With Yeong-han “SP9RK1E” Kim mastery of Genji, they were able to pull out a close win over the 2019 Champions the San Franciso Shock. They also would go on to win the Summer Showdown after a game seven with the Philadelphia Fusion.
