Subscriber Only Streams Banned By Several Game Developers
A lot of fuss has been made about Twitch’s new subscriber-only streams. The new feature will allow only viewers who are subbed to the channel to watch, while others will see a preview and then have to choose whether or not to subscribe. The move has caused a lot of commotion in the community, with many people feeling that Twitch was some sort of last bastion of free content.
Now we’ve learned that for many games, the discussion may be a moot point anyway. Major developers like Blizzard and Riot have built into their terms of service that the game is okay to be streamed with donations accepted, only so long as people are able to watch for free as well. Basically, developers have cooked into their ToS that you can’t stream their games behind a pay-wall.
